Friendship Day is a slightly silly occasion that gives you a decent excuse to say something you have never actually said. These six are for the friend who has been there through several versions of you.

Say how long, and what has changed in you. The value of a very old friendship is that it has survived several versions of a person. Naming that — four different versions of myself — is a compliment nobody else is in a position to pay.
Do not apologise for the gaps. Long adult friendships run on months of silence and it is not a failing. Saying that ours picks up mid-sentence is warmer and truer than sorry I have been bad at keeping in touch, which turns a card into an apology.
A silly occasion is still a good excuse to write down something true.
