Love messages for your husband

A husband who has been told he is a good father and a good provider has still probably not been told, in writing, that he is loved. These six are for that, and they assume a marriage rather than a honeymoon.

Six messages you could actually send

Continue writing opens that message in the card with the words already in it, so all that is left is to change a word and send it. The last message is the longest of the six, and it is the only one you have to copy across yourself.

  1. I love you. Not for anything in particular, just completely and all the time. You've never once made me feel like I was handling something on my own, and that's rarer than you think. Thank you for being the steady one in this house.

  2. I still like you, which after all this time feels like the bigger compliment. You worry quietly so that nobody else has to, and you think I don't see it. I do see it. I love you, and I want you to know it on the ordinary days too.

  3. I don't say it enough, so I'm writing it down. I love you. You make a hard week manageable just by being in the house at the end of it. Thank you for the patience, and for putting up with me at my least reasonable. ❤️

  4. I love you, though I'd love you slightly more if you'd stop keeping the same nine screws in a drawer for eleven years. Take that as the joke and this as the truth: you've made my life bigger than it was before you. Thank you.

  5. I keep thinking about the year everything went wrong at once and you simply kept things upright, no speeches, no fuss about it. I never properly thanked you for that. I'm doing it now. I love you, and I'd choose all of it again.

  6. I love you, and I don't often say it in this many words. You're the reason a hard week ends somewhere calm. You worry quietly so nobody else has to, you fix things before I've noticed they're broken, and you've never made me feel alone with something. Thank you. I'd do the whole thing again, badly organised and all.

Writing your own

Aim at the part of him nobody thanks. There is usually one job in a marriage that is invisible because it never fails — the money, the parents, the driving, the being calm when everyone else is not. Naming that is the closest thing to a love letter a practical man will accept without deflecting.

Resist the joke as an exit. Indian couples are fluent in affection-through-teasing, and one funny line is good, but if the whole note is a joke he gets to laugh instead of being told. Land one true sentence with no escape hatch in it, then joke afterwards if you must.

Write the sentence you keep swallowing, and let a sealed envelope do the delivering.

It arrives as a sealed envelope they open on their phone.
