Anniversary wishes for your wife

Most anniversary messages to a wife thank her for putting up with him. These do something harder and better: they say what the years have actually been like.

Six messages you could actually send

Continue writing opens that message in the card with the words already in it, so all that is left is to change a word and send it. The last message is the longest of the six, and it is the only one you have to copy across yourself.

  1. Happy anniversary. Still the best decision I've made, and I made it with almost no information to go on. Thank you for the years, especially the unglamorous ones, and for building a life out of days nobody would think to photograph.

  2. Happy anniversary. Every year I understand a little better how much of this you've carried without making a noise about it. I don't say thank you often enough for that. I'd choose this again tomorrow, and every year after it. ❤️

  3. Happy anniversary. We've been through an easy year and a hard one and came out of both still on the same side, which I think is the part that actually counts. Thank you for staying steady. Here's to the next stretch of it.

  4. Happy anniversary. Another year of you tolerating me magnificently and pretending my habits have improved. Genuinely though, you're still the most interesting person in any room we walk into, and I am aware of my luck.

  5. Happy anniversary. I was thinking about the wedding, how nothing ran on time and how little that mattered in the end. Everything since has been a bit like that, and better than I expected. Thank you for all of it, mess included.

  6. Happy anniversary. Best decision I ever made, and I made it with almost no information. Thank you for the years, especially the unglamorous ones, and for building a whole life out of days nobody would think to photograph. I understand better every year how much of it you've carried. Here's to the next stretch.

Writing your own

Say the thing you have realised, not the thing you have always felt. Always felt is not news on an anniversary. This year I understood how much of this you do alone is news, and it is the sentence a wife is most likely to still have on her phone in December.

Do not make it a summary of the wedding. She was there. Write about the current version of the two of you — the flat, the routine, the argument you have every Sunday — because the card is for the marriage as it is, not as it was photographed.

One letter, sealed, arriving on the day rather than a week of build-up.

Write her card

It arrives as a sealed envelope they open on their phone.
