Congratulations messages

Congratulations messages for your brother

Brothers congratulate each other in about four words and then change the subject. A card is a way round that, and these six are built to survive being read by someone who hates being praised.

Six messages you could actually send

Continue writing opens that message in the card with the words already in it, so all that is left is to change a word and send it. The last message is the longest of the six, and it is the only one you have to copy across yourself.

  1. Congratulations, bhai. Well earned, and I'm not going to embarrass you by saying it twice. You put the work in when nobody at all was watching, and it's landed exactly where it should have landed.

  2. You got it. Never in doubt at this end, whatever you were telling me at two in the morning back in March. Congratulations properly, and enjoy it before you start worrying about the next thing.

  3. Congratulations. Genuinely well done, and be warned that the whole family is going to be insufferable about this for at least a month. Deservedly so. Take the credit and let them get on with it.

  4. Well done. This is the part where I tell you I'm proud of you and you tell me to shut up, so let's get it over with quickly. Also, the first round is permanently on you from this point onwards.

  5. Congratulations. I've watched you take the long route to this and not complain about it once, which I'd never have managed. Whatever's next, you already know I'm here for it. Very happy for you today.

  6. Congratulations, bhai. You'll want to skip straight past this and start on whatever comes next, so before you do: this was hard, you did it without complaining about it once, and you deserve every bit of the noise the family is about to make. Take a day and let it just be good news.

Writing your own

Name the awkwardness and use it as the joke. This is the part where I say I am proud and you say shut up does the sincere work and the deflecting work in one line, which is the only reliable way to be earnest with a brother.

Be exact about the achievement. Brothers spot vagueness instantly and read it as not having paid attention. The specific exam, the specific company, the specific number of attempts — one of those proves you were following it.

Say it in a card so neither of you has to say it on the phone.

It arrives as a sealed envelope they open on their phone.
