Birthday wishes
Fathers are usually thanked for what they provided and never for who they are. These six try the other way round, and they are short, because he will not sit through a long one.

Continue writing opens that message in the card with the words already in it, so all that is left is to change a word and send it. The last message is the longest of the six, and it is the only one you have to copy across yourself.
Happy birthday, Papa. Half of what I know how to do, I learned by watching you do it first while pretending not to pay attention. Thank you for that. I hope today is an easy one, with everyone you like in the room.
Continue writing with message 1Happy birthday. You never once made a hard year look hard from where I was standing, and I understand now what that must have cost you. Thank you for never asking me to be anybody other than myself.
Continue writing with message 2Happy birthday, Papa. Please accept a gift today without arguing about the price of it, just this once. You've spent long enough putting everyone else first. Sit down, eat well, and let today be yours.
Continue writing with message 3Happy birthday. You gave excellent advice extremely badly for about twenty years and I've ended up taking most of it anyway. Congratulations on the slow victory. Now come and cut the cake before it's late.
Continue writing with message 4Happy birthday. I don't say this sort of thing out loud, so it's going in writing instead: I'm glad you're my father, I've been lucky in that, and I hope this year is a kind and quiet one for you.
Continue writing with message 5Happy birthday, Papa. We've never been a family that says these things out loud, so I'm writing it down instead. You worked long hours for years and never once made it sound like a sacrifice, and a fair amount of how I handle things now came from you without either of us noticing. Have an unhurried day.
Pre-empt the deflection. A father will call the card unnecessary before he reads the second line. Saying you know he will say that, in the card, closes the exit and lets the sincere part land — it is a small trick and it works almost every time.
Thank him for a decision, not for provision. Thank you for everything you provided is what a formal letter says. Thank you for letting me take the arts stream when everyone told you not to is a specific act of trust, and it is the thing he has been quietly hoping was noticed.
Say the sentence in writing that neither of you will say across the room.
