The first of January is when everyone sends the same four words at the same time. A note that mentions the actual year you both just had is a different object entirely.

Refer to the year you both just had. Generic hope for the future is what the forwards do. Thanks for being a fixed point in a strange year is specific, and it turns a New Year message into an acknowledgement of the friendship.
Wish for ordinary rather than spectacular. Nobody believes a wish for success. More dull good weeks and fewer hard months is what an adult actually wants, and it reads as somebody who knows what your year was like.
