Thank you messages

Thank you messages for your parents

In most Indian households nobody thanks their parents, because it would be strange, and because the debt is too large to itemise. Which is exactly why a written note lands so hard.

Six messages you could actually send

Continue writing opens that message in the card with the words already in it, so all that is left is to change a word and send it. The last message is the longest of the six, and it is the only one you have to copy across yourself.

  1. Thank you for everything you went without so that we didn't have to. Neither of you ever mentioned it, and I only understood it much later, once I was the one doing the arithmetic. I'm grateful. ❤️

  2. I've been meaning to write this for a while. Thank you for the years when things were tight and you made sure we never found out. I know now. I still don't know how you managed it, and I'm glad you did.

  3. Thank you for letting me choose, including the time you were both certain I was making a mistake. You said your bit, and then you stood behind me anyway. That's a harder thing to do than either of you let on.

  4. I've started saying things you used to say, in the same tone, which is alarming. It turns out you were right about most of it. Thank you for the advice I ignored at the time and have quietly taken since.

  5. I know we don't really say this out loud in our house, so I've written it down instead. Thank you, for all of it, the big things and the very ordinary daily ones. I hope you know how much of me is you. ❤️

  6. I've been trying to write this without sounding formal and I keep failing, so I'll just say it plainly. Thank you for the years when money was tight and you made sure we never found out. I know now, I've done the arithmetic, and I don't know how the two of you managed it.

Writing your own

Pick one sacrifice you have only understood recently. Working out the cost of something as an adult — the fees, the transfer, the job they did not take — and naming it is what turns a thank you into proof that it was noticed. Parents do not need the whole list. One item, correctly identified, does it.

Write it in the language of your house. If thank you is not a word your family uses out loud, saying so in the card is not a weakness — I know we do not say this here is often the most honest sentence on the page, and it explains why you wrote instead of speaking.

Some things are easier to write than to say at the dinner table. That is a good reason to write them.

It arrives as a sealed envelope they open on their phone.
