Separate proud from pleased. Boys hear proud attached to results so often that it stops registering as affection. I like you, quite apart from anything you have done is a different sentence and a much rarer one, and it is the one worth spending the card on.
Say it in writing precisely because you do not say it aloud. If your relationship runs on cricket and logistics, a card is not a break from character, it is the one available channel. Admitting that in the note makes it easier for both of you.
