A friend who has just got something they worked years for deserves better than a thumbs up. These six are for the new job, the result, the offer letter and the long-awaited yes.

Credit the invisible work. Anyone can say well deserved. A friend can say I remember the six months of applications and the interview you thought you had failed — and that is what turns a congratulation into an acknowledgement.
Do not compare yourself in the card. Even a light I need to get my life together shifts the attention across the table. Congratulate cleanly, and be self-deprecating in person if you must.
