Six messages you could actually send

Continue writing opens that message in the card with the words already in it, so all that is left is to change a word and send it. The last message is the longest of the six, and it is the only one you have to copy across yourself.

  1. Congratulations. I watched how much this actually cost you, so nobody is going to convince me it was luck. You've earned this and then some. Very happy for you, and go and enjoy it properly first.

  2. Congratulations! Genuinely thrilled for you, and slightly annoyed on principle, as is traditional. This is good news and it couldn't have gone to somebody who deserved it more than you do.

  3. Congratulations. You've been quietly chipping away at this for so long that I suspect you've half forgotten it was ever the goal. Well, it's done now. Take today off from being modest about it, because nobody else is.

  4. Well done. Not surprised in the slightest, which is rather the point of the compliment. Now that you're officially the successful one, I'm assuming dinner is on you for the foreseeable future.

  5. Congratulations. There must have been a hundred days in this where stopping would have been the easier option, and you didn't stop on any of them. That's the bit to be pleased about, more than the result.

  6. Congratulations. I've had a front-row seat to what this actually took, so I'm not going to insult you by calling it luck. There was a long stretch where you very nearly walked away from it and you didn't, and that's the part I'd want written down somewhere. Genuinely happy for you. Go and enjoy it.

Writing your own

Credit the invisible work. Anyone can say well deserved. A friend can say I remember the six months of applications and the interview you thought you had failed — and that is what turns a congratulation into an acknowledgement.

Do not compare yourself in the card. Even a light I need to get my life together shifts the attention across the table. Congratulate cleanly, and be self-deprecating in person if you must.

Send the one message that is not a reaction under their LinkedIn post.
