Six messages you could actually send

Continue writing opens that message in the card with the words already in it, so all that is left is to change a word and send it. The last message is the longest of the six, and it is the only one you have to copy across yourself.

  1. Happy birthday. You're the best thing to have happened to me more or less by accident, and I've never quite got over the luck of it. Today is yours from start to finish, and I don't intend to share you with anybody else.

  2. Happy birthday. ❤️ Thank you for being consistently kind, including on the days when it wasn't convenient and nobody would have noticed if you weren't. That's the thing I'd pick out about you if anyone asked.

  3. Happy birthday. Another year of you, and I'd like a great many more of them, please. I hope this one is kind to you, and I hope you get some of the things you've quietly stopped mentioning that you want.

  4. Happy birthday to my favourite person and easily the worst planner I know. I've organised today badly on purpose so that it feels familiar to you. Show up hungry and let me do the deciding for once.

  5. Happy birthday. Two things I don't say nearly enough and should. I'm proud of you, and I'm glad it turned out to be you. The last year has been a great deal better for having you in it, and I hope you already knew that.

  6. Happy birthday. You're not somebody who likes a fuss, so I'll keep this to the part that matters. You've been steady and kind through a year in which plenty of people wouldn't have been, and I've noticed every bit of it. So take today off, let me handle the arrangements, and let somebody look after you.

Writing your own

One joke, one true thing, in that order. The joke gets him reading and stops the card feeling like a speech; the true sentence after it is the part that stays. Reverse the order and the joke undercuts the sincerity you just spent.

Assume he might show it to someone. Men often do, with a birthday card, which is a compliment. Write it so the private line is warm rather than embarrassing, and you get the affection without the wince.

Sealed envelope, wax seal, his name on it. Better than a story tag.

It arrives as a sealed envelope they open on their phone.
